GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION
We’re looking for a creative innovator to aide our commitment to UC Merced’s carbon neutrality goals. This position will require an individual who will compile and evaluate information relevant to communication of carbon-neutrality measures. We need a self-motivated individual who takes initiative by setting their own goals, creates solutions for difficult problems and executes well thought out plans that ultimately will reduce GHG emissions and energy use. The ideal candidate will be able to creatively solve problems and effectively communicate the solutions and translate technical concepts into clear prose. A passion for sustainability is a must. The work that you will be charged with developing a communications strategy in support of the UC Carbon-Neutrality Initiative. As an intern, you would work closely with Roger Bales on audience research and student engagement, as part of a multi-campus effort managed by Stacy Rebich Hespanha.
The internship will require a commitment of 8 hours a week and will last 10-14 weeks. The internships will begin April 1st, 2017. The compensation will be $14/hour. This is a paid internship that will provide you with invaluable experiences and professional development opportunities.
As an Intern, you will report directly to:
-Roger Bales, Director Sierra Nevada Research Group, who will act as your on-site supervisor for this internship.
-Nicholas Conte, Sustainability Coordinator, who will assist in developing, planning, and implementing the program and will act as a sustainability peer-to-peer throughout the duration of this internship.
Primary Duties:
The intern will carry out analysis of proposed actions under the UC Carbon-Neutrality Initiative, identify possible barriers to implementation
Assist in designing means of overcoming barriers.
Evaluation of data and synthesis of past findings will be involved.
Participate in cross-campus activities and training
Secondary Duties:
Form a cooperative, working relationship with students and staff
Meet regularly with both supervisors to provide updates and discuss program development and implementation
Give a presentation to high school students detailing your internship
Create a poster highlighting your internship
MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
Strong interest in sustainability and communications
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle multiple tasks and job functions
Maintain excellent attendance
Be prompt and reliable
Act responsibly in a professional office work environment
Demonstrate excellent teamwork skills and demeanor
Proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Strong writing and editing skills
Detail oriented
Demonstrate initiative and creativity
Ability to work proactively and independently
Ability to work and coordinate goals in a team
Ability to meet deadlines
Minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher
