Environmental Sustainability Internship
Merced County Public Health – Sustainability Science Internship
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITITION
Merced County Public Health Intern will have the opportunity work within the Communication, Culture, and Health Research Team, which is committed to understanding the synergy between public health and sustainability. The Intern will contribute to a project that aims to improve the quantity and quality of health information available to Merced County Public Health department and its respective residents. The intern will work on identifying areas in which aspects of sustainability such as, energy reduction and GHG reductions pertains to Merced County Public Health Department. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated background of outstanding written communication skills, and a passion for sustainability and public health. The intern will be expected to translate technical scientific concepts into clear prose.
The internship will require a commitment of 8 hours a week and will last 10-14 weeks. The internships will begin January 10th, 2017. The compensation will be $14/hour. This is a paid internship that will provide you with invaluable experiences and professional development opportunities.
As an intern, you will report directly to:
- Sydney Loewen, Ph.D., Epidemiologist, Merced County Public Health Department, who will act as your on-site supervisor for this internship.
-Nicholas Conte, Sustainability Coordinator, who will assist in developing, planning, and implementing the program and will act as a sustainability peer-to-peer throughout the duration of this internship.
Primary Duties:
Create a briefing report on Strategic Growth Council’s funding priorities and cycle
Better understand how CalEnviroScreen identifies disadvantaged communities and identify areas in Merced County that fall within the CalEnviroScreen’s parameters.
Understand current Merced County Public Health Department project goals related to land use, housing and transportation as these social determinants of health impact population health.
Draft a funding proposal outline that brings together the Strategic Growth Council’s funding priorities and the Merced County Department of Public Health’s project goals designed to improve land use, housing and/or transportation planning in one or more of Merced County disadvantaged communities.
Prepare abstract for presentation at a scientific conference as well as the UC Merced Research Week.
Present findings to Merced County Public Health staff and to the San Joaquin Valley Public Health Consortium.
Secondary Duties:
Form a cooperative, working relationship with students and staff
Meet regularly with both supervisors to provide updates and discuss program development and implementation
Give a presentation to high school students detailing your internship
Create a poster highlighting your internship
MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
Strong interest in sustainability and communications
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle multiple tasks and job functions
Maintain excellent attendance
Be prompt and reliable
Act responsibly in a professional office work environment
Demonstrate excellent teamwork skills and demeanor
Proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Strong writing and editing skills
Detail oriented
Demonstrate initiative and creativity
Ability to work proactively and independently
Ability to work and coordinate goals in a team
Ability to meet deadlines
Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
An understanding of Cap and Trade and California EnvironScreen are expected
