UC Merced Student Internship
Spring Semester, 2017

Purpose of Internship
The Merced Bicycle Coalition, a local nonprofit organization, has need of temporary part-time staff to assist in carrying out projects as part of its mission to promote bicycling as a safe and normal means of everyday transportation and recreation.
This is a paid position. The intern will work 6 to 8 hours a week for 14 weeks, from January 30 through May 7, 2017 with $14/hour compensation.
Primary Duties
Assist with planning and logistics for bicycling events such as Bike to Work and School Day
Recruit local organizations, including U.C. Merced, to participate in Bike to Work challenges
Assist with planning and logistics for Active Transportation/Safe Routes to School activities with school districts
Learn how to fit bicycle helmets; recruit and train up to 6 volunteers to assist with helmet fitting and giveaway events
Assist with planning and logistics for community bike rides
Staff tables at community events to provide bicycling educational materials
Create and distribute promotional materials using print and digital media
Assist in energy reduction (GHG emission savings) calculations, data analysis and report writing
Secondary Duties:
Form a cooperative, working relationship with students and staff
Meet regularly with both supervisors to provide updates and discuss program development and implementation
Give a presentation to high school students detailing your internship
Create a poster highlighting your internship
The intern will report to:
Lisa Kayser-Grant, Treasurer of the Merced Bicycle Coalition and League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor
Justin Hicks, Vice Chair, Merced Bicycle Coalition
Nick Conte, Sustainability Coordinator, UC Merced
Minimum Requirements
Commitment to sustainability
Strong communication skills
Willingness to meet with members of the public
Proficient with Word, Powerpoint, and Publisher, or comparable programs
Demonstrate initiative and creativity
Ability to work proactively and independently
Self-motivated, organized, and efficient
Ability to ride a bike, or the willingness and time to learn, is a plus.
