Environmental Sustainability Internship

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

EcoReps and Energize Colleges have joined forces to collaborate on an exciting revitalization of Energy Water Conservation Battle! This internship will aide in coordinating a competition between UC Merced housing residents. This competition will measure the energy and water consumption for each resident hall over an eight-week period, and whichever hall that has the most significant reduction will win Energized Colleges swag items, such as, water canteens, reusable ChicoBags, and many other eco-friendly products.

We are searching for an intern who will make this competition more interactive through marketing, community outreach and engagement. The interns will educate students about the importance of energy conservation, and will simultaneously be working with EcoReps to educate about waste reduction opportunities. The intern will be expected to help raise awareness about these competitions via social media and tabling. In addition, the intern will help plan future events and projects by working together and using mutual resources for the benefit of sustainability awareness.

The internship will require a commitment of 8 hours a week and will last 10-14 weeks. The internships will begin January 10th, 2017. The compensation will be $13/hour. This is a paid internship that will provide you with invaluable experiences and professional development opportunities.

As an Intern, you will report directly to:

-Colleen McCormick, Director of Sustainability, who will act as your on-site supervisor for this internship.

-Lorena Salamanca, Intern report

-Nicholas Conte, Sustainability Coordinator, who will assist in developing, planning, and implementing the program and will act as a sustainability peer-to-peer throughout the duration of this internship.

Primary Duties:

  • Facilitate the logistical development of the competition

  • Develop training materials, web resources, and other educational materials for various aspects of sustainability to raise awareness of the competition

  • Create outreach campaigns to educate staff and students

  • Media outreach, social media content creation and management

  • Produce a report detailing how efforts have improved over the course of the competition

Secondary Duties:

  • Form a cooperative, working relationship with students and staff

  • Meet regularly with both supervisors to provide updates and discuss program development and implementation

  • Give a presentation to high school students detailing your internship

MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

  • Strong interest in sustainability and communications

  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle multiple tasks and job functions

  • Maintain excellent attendance

  • Be prompt and reliable

  • Act responsibly in a professional office work environment

  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork skills and demeanor

  • Proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Detail oriented

  • Demonstrate initiative and creativity

  • Ability to work proactively and independently

  • Ability to work and coordinate goals in a team

  • Ability to meet deadlines

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher
