STUDENT EMPLOYMENT JOB DESCRIPTION FORM
Environmental Sustainability Internship
Engineering, Marketing and Community Outreach: A Zero Waste Initiative to Reduce Energy Use
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION
UC Merced has pledged a triple zero commitment, which includes an ambitious target to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020. One of the biggest challenges that this position will address is marketing and community outreach of this commitment.
This opportunity will require two interns: one intern will focus on engineering; one intern will focus on marketing and outreach. However, both interns are expected to collaborate and work on both aspects as a team.
Marketing: We’re looking for a creative innovator and communicator to aide our commitment to UC Merced’s Triple Zero goals. This position will require an individual who will research, create and run marketing campaigns that demonstrate UC Merced’s triple zero commitment. These campaigns will be directed to staff and students alike. These campaigns will be compared to benchmark data, and therefore there will be an element of data analysis and report writing. These campaigns should highlight a ‘how to do better’ solution that you and your supervisor will work on together. The ideal candidate will be able to creatively solve problems and effectively communicate the solutions and translate technical concepts into clear prose. A passion for sustainability is a must.
Engineering: We’re seeking an engineering student to develop a ‘better solution’ to our recycling center. This student will be directly involved in engineering more effective ways to operate UC Merced’s recycling center. We need a self-motivated individual who takes initiative by setting their own goals, creates solutions for difficult problems and executes well thought out plans that ultimately will reduce waste to landfills, GHG emissions and energy use.
The internship will require a commitment of 8 hours a week and will last 10-14 weeks. The internships will begin January 10th, 2017. The compensation will be $13/hour. This is a paid internship that will provide you with invaluable experiences and professional development opportunities.
As an intern, you will report directly to:
-Matthew Hirota, Waste Reduction/Recycle Coordinator, who will act as your on-site supervisor for this internship.
-Nicholas Conte, Sustainability Coordinator, who will assist in developing, planning, and implementing the program and will act as a sustainability peer-to-peer throughout the duration of this internship.
Primary Duties:
Develop training materials, web resources, and other educational materials for various aspects of sustainability that aide our triple zero commitment
Create outreach campaigns to educate staff and students
Engineer a ‘better solution’ to our recycling center
Assist the development of a ‘standardized building conduct’ campaign on better recycling methods
