Environmental Sustainability Internship

Recommissioning and Retrocommissioning UC Merced Buildings

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

“The commissioning process for existing buildings, commonly referred to as retrocommissioning, is a systematic process for improving an existing building’s performance by identifying and implementing relatively low-cost operational and maintenance improvements, helping to ensure that the building’s performance meets owner expectations.”

We’re seeking two self-motivated individuals to assist recommissioning UC Merced Campus buildings. This position will require an individual who will research, identify and implement energy saving opportunities in UC Merced buildings. The first building to be examined will be the Science & Engineering Building 1. We need a self-motivated individual who takes initiative by setting their own goals, creates solutions for difficult problems and executes well thought out plans that ultimately will reduce GHG emissions and energy use. These campaigns will require data analysis and report writing skills. The ideal candidate will be able to creatively solve problems and effectively communicate the solutions and translate technical concepts into clear prose. A passion for sustainability is a must.

The internship will require a commitment of 8 hours a week and will last 10-14 weeks. The internships will begin January 10th, 2017. The compensation will be $14/hour. This is a paid internship that will provide you with invaluable experiences and professional development opportunities. As an intern, you will report directly to:

-Zuhair Mased, Director of Energy & Sustainability, who will act as your on-site supervisor for this internship.

-Mark Maxwell, Assistant Director of Sustainability

-Nicholas Conte, Sustainability Coordinator, who will assist in developing, planning, and implementing the program and will act as a sustainability peer-to-peer throughout the duration of this internship.

Primary Duties:

  • Develop training materials, web resources, and other educational materials energy efficiency and conversation methods

  • Create outreach campaigns to educate staff and students

  • Verify that the building owner and staff receive adequate documentation and assistance to implement improvements, as well as training on monitoring and maintaining improvements

  • Assist to optimize existing energy efficiency measures and eliminate inefficiencies

  • Develop a ‘standardized building conduct’ campaign starting with Science & Engineering 1

  • Ensure that the building is performing efficiently and as expected

  • Recommend and implement measures that improve equipment performance

  • Produce a report detailing how efforts have improved energy efficiency

Secondary Duties:

  • Form a cooperative, working relationship with students and staff

  • Meet regularly with both supervisors to provide updates and discuss program development and implementation

  • Give a presentation to high school students detailing your internship

  • Create a poster highlighting your internship

MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

  • Strong interest in sustainability and communications

  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle multiple tasks and job functions

  • Maintain excellent attendance

  • Be prompt and reliable

  • Act responsibly in a professional office work environment

  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork skills and demeanor

  • Proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Detail oriented

  • Demonstrate initiative and creativity

  • Ability to work proactively and independently

  • Ability to work and coordinate goals in a team

  • Ability to meet deadlines

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher
