Environmental Sustainability Internship

Marketing and Community Outreach: Communicating Food Sustainability Science to the General Public

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Sustainability Science Communication Intern will have the opportunity work within the Communication, Culture, and Health Research Team, which is committed to understanding how culture and communication influence health outcomes and can contribute to reducing health disparities in the United States.

The Sustainability Science Communication Intern will contribute to a project that aims to improve the quantity and quality of health information available to Merced County residents. The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background (engineering, pre-med, or biology majors are especially invited to apply), outstanding written communication skills, and a passion for sustainability and public health. The intern will be expected to translate technical scientific concepts into clear prose.

The internship will require a minimum commitment of 8 hours a week and will last 10-14 weeks. The internship will begin January 10th, 2017. The compensation will be $13/hour. This is a paid internship that will provide you with experience working on a research team as well as opportunities for professional development.

As an intern, you will work with:

  • Dr. Susana Ramirez, Assistant Professor of Public Health Communication, Director of the Communication, Culture, and Health Research Team

  • Ms. Katie Johnson, Communication Project Manager, who will provide day-to-day supervision.

  • Graduate and undergraduate students who are also members of the Communication, Culture, and Health Research Team (www.communicationculturehealth.org)

Nicholas Conte, , who will assist in developing, planning, and implementing the program and will act as a sustainability peer-to-peer mentor throughout the duration of this internship.

Primary Duties:

  • Create annotated bibliographies on sustainability of food systems and sustainability communications using APA format.

  • Write at least 3 blog posts and/or Op-Eds on food and sustainability, highlighting recent research and demonstrating proficiency in translating scientific principles for lay audiences.

  • Write at least 3 news articles on food and sustainability, demonstrating proficiency in the interpretation of scientific principles and scientific data.

  • Assist with manuscript preparation, including substantive writing and formatting.

Prepare abstract for presentation at a scientific conference as well as the UC Merced Research Week.

Secondary Duties:

  • Meet regularly with supervisors to provide updates and discuss program development and implementation.

  • Work with a team including PI and graduate students to interpret data and plan manuscript.

  • Give a presentation to high school students describing your internship and college experiences.

MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

  • Exemplary written communication skills

  • Strong interest in sustainability and communication

  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle multiple tasks and job functions

  • Proficient with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
